The Indie Game Developer Mommy's Best Games (MBG) releases its intense highscore shoot'em-up Game Type DX this year for Nintendo Switch, PS4 / PS5 and Xbox One / X.

Originally published as a protest against Microsoft's terrible dashboard update in 2011, and now re-mastered and improved for extreme fun!
Lead Designer Nathan Fouts said, "2011 we have developed Game Type to illuminate the problem of findability of games on the Xbox 360. After a large update of the menu system, Indie games were practically buried, "says Fouts. "We quickly picked up the problem in a satirical way and thus reveals much attention in the media. It was an incredible feeling to know that our little shooter has helped to move Microsoft to make a change and repair the damaged dashboard menu. "

buried indie games
The dashboard update for the Xbox 360 of December 2011 was a great revision of the previous dashboard style that was used for three years. And it brought a drastic change for games in general. The previous Dashboard menu displays the games on the Xbox 360 first. With the new update, Indie-Games were now much harder to find and were rolled out of advertising.
In 2011, there were "AAA" publications in both digital and physical shops. But Indie games were published only digitally via the Xbox 360 Store. In the new menu, the only way to search Xbox Live Indie Games (Xblig), the use of a single menu tile, which was strangely called "game type". Even Microsoft's own XBLA games were hidden here.
A protest game is born
The three former, award-winning titles of Mommy's Best Games, "Shoot 1up", "Weapon Choice" and "Explosionade", were also sold on XBox 360 over xblig. As a young Indie studio, this was the only source of revenue from MBG before the popularity of Steam prevailed.
MBG knew she had to act quickly to make sure the players could find their games in the new menu system.
The idea was to change the terrible name "Game Type" in favor of MBG and draw attention to the problem. Game Type showed a fake Xbox 360 dashboard that showed the players the way to Game Type to help you find the search for Indie games.
Microsoft changes something
Game Type, the game, received a broad coverage in the gaming press and brought great attention to the problem in the media.
Microsoft briefly revised the menu system and removed the poorly named menu tiles, making it easier to find Xblig and XBLA games again.
